Harvest Manitoba is taking steps to ensure fewer children in Brandon, Man., go hungry.

On Thursday, the not-for-profit organization announced that it’s expanding its Meals2Go program to Brandon as Betty Gibson and King George Schools join the initiative.

Meals2Go provides students with food kits to take home for Saturday and Sunday – the two days of the week they don’t have access to school meal programs. Each kit contains cereal, yogurt, milk and fresh fruit.

The program already operates in schools in Winnipeg and Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

With the latest expansion, it is now nourishing 5,000 kids across 15 Manitoba schools.

Harvest Manitoba notes that ensuring students have access to food over the weekend means they are more likely to attend classes, and feel better mentally, emotionally and physically.
