A special weather statement has been issued for a portion of Manitoba, warning of a developing system that could bring heavy and blowing snow to parts of the province this week.

Environment and Climate Change Canada posted the statement Tuesday afternoon, warning that heavy and rapidly accumulating snowfall is expected for western areas of the province starting late Thursday afternoon.

The culprit - a developing low pressure system pushing in from Alberta.

The statement is in effect for areas including Dauphin, Swan Valley, Roblin, and Riding Mountain National Park. It has been expanded to include Portage la Prairie on Wednesday.

The worst of the snowfall is supposed to come Thursday and continue into Friday, before it tapers off that night.

Ten to 20 centimetres of snow is expected, ECCC said, but the eastern sides of the Riding and Duck mountains, as well as the Swan Hills could get a little more accumulation.

The system is expected to bring reduced visibility and is forecast to end overnight Friday.
