Colleen Bready’s forecast: A momentary break from the deep freeze

Wednesday brings a big break from the very cold weather conditions from earlier this week across Manitoba. Enjoy it while it lasts; another deep freeze is just a few days away.

Temperatures will soar up to or above the freezing mark across southern Manitoba and some northern regions Wednesday afternoon.

The trade-off is strong and gusting winds from the west and northwest across the province.

The mild temperatures and strong winds are associated with a low pressure system near Churchill that’s also bringing snow to the north. Around two to four cm of light snow is expected in several areas.

The snow will taper off Wednesday night, but the break will be brief.

Winnipeg and the southeast might be clipped with flurries late this evening or overnight. Blowing snow can’t be ruled out either, as strong winds will shift to come from the northwest.

A much more potent low pressure system forming Wednesday over north-central Alberta has already triggered snowfall warnings as far east as Saskatchewan right up to the Manitoba border.

Snow, falling heavily at times, is expected to reach western Manitoba, including Swan River, The Pas and Flin Flon by Thursday afternoon. Snow will spread across central regions Thursday into Friday.

The south might get grazed with flurries Thursday night and Friday. However, Environment and Climate Change Canada said blowing snow will be a concern across the southern Prairies with the passage of the system’s cold front Thursday night into Friday.

Once it’s passed by, be prepared for temperatures to plummet just in time for the weekend.
