Colleen Bready’s forecast: A blustery start to the week before the snow

It shouldn’t come as much surprise that after a mild early March weekend, this week gets off to a blustery start for southern Manitoba.

A low pressure system is bringing snow and blowing snow on Monday afternoon to many areas.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued snowfall warnings for several Interlake and eastern regions, where around 10 cm of snowfall is expected.

The weather agency said snow will taper Monday afternoon as the low moves into Ontario, where snowfall warnings are also in effect in the Red Lake and Sioux Lookout regions.

Snow and blowing snow are also expected for regions further south Monday afternoon, including Winnipeg and Brandon. Around 2 cm of snowfall is forecast for Winnipeg, while Brandon could see slightly higher amounts.

Strong and gusting north winds will also cause blowing snow, so be prepared for potentially tough highway conditions during the afternoon commute. Beforehand, ECCC said there is also a risk of freezing rain early in the afternoon.

Temperatures are also expected to drop Monday afternoon. In Winnipeg, they could fall several degrees to around -12 C.

North winds will become even stronger early in the evening, then slowly diminish the rest of the evening before becoming light overnight.

ECCC said Monday’s snow is in the wake of a cold front pushing south as a ridge of high pressure builds from the north. That will leave northern Manitoba basking in the sunshine, with mostly clear conditions continuing tonight.
