A fundraiser working to raise money for local kids was a big success.

A group of University of Windsor students ‘popped’ into action and collected a total of $18,500 from a popcorn fundraiser.

Armaan Saini and his friends organized the fundraiser at 10 daycares in Windsor-Essex to support the W.E. Care for Kids Foundation.

“I feel great that we were able to raise that much money for a good cause,” Saini said Monday during their “big cheque” presentation inside Windsor Regional Hospital.

Saini, Olivia Wahby, Lauren Oschanney, Vanessa Riolo, and Selina Grado teamed up with the Richmond Popcorn Company to offer families locally made popcorn.

“It’s important to partner with someone that has the same vision and wants to drive positive change in the community,” Saini said.

Families at 10 daycares ordered popcorn – the most popular flavour being Chicago Mix – and the proceeds were donated to W.E. Care for Kids.

“It’s heartwarming to see young people giving back to their community in such uncertain times,” Foundation President Viki Grado said in a news release.

This is the second time Saini, 22, has organized the fundraiser.

He a four-year bio medical student at the University of Windsor hoping to go to medical school next year.

“I’ve witnessed personally the disparities that we have in Windsor-Essex, in terms of infrastructure and, I guess I wanted to support (and) alleviate those disparities in our community,” Saini told CTV News

W.E. Care for Kids, which launched in 1997, is a foundation that raises money for paediatric medical equipment and offers supports to the youngest patients.
