Abbotsford police are appealing for witnesses and information after a woman reported being sexually assaulted by a stranger in a park Monday evening.

Officers were called to Mill Lake Park around 6:40 p.m., the Abbotsford Police Department said in a news release. The woman was walking on a path next to the lake between Ashley Way and Alta Avenue at the time, according to authorities.

“She was alone when an unknown man approached her, asking for assistance to take a photo with his cell phone. During this encounter, the victim was assaulted, although shaken, she was not injured,” the statement from police said, adding that the investigation so far suggests the assault was random.

The man is described as approximately 5’8” tall, with a medium build, black hair and a black beard. At the time, he was wearing black pants and a black and white jacket, and carrying an umbrella, according to police.
