Police in Vancouver say a 16-year-old boy is facing four charges, including assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm, after a taxi driver was stabbed last week in the city’s Downtown Eastside.
In a statement Monday, Vancouver police spokesperson Sgt. Steve Addison says the suspect was also charged with assault and possession of a weapon.
According to the police department, an off-duty officer witnessed the stabbing near the intersection of Main and East Hastings streets shortly after 9:30 p.m. on March 18.
“The officer alerted on-duty VPD members, who responded immediately and took the suspect into custody,” the department said in a statement announcing the arrest.
Investigators say the 59-year-old cab driver was taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injures.
The suspect, a resident of Richmond, B.C., was released from custody pending his next court appearance, according to police.
