Environment and Climate Change Canada is warning travellers between the Lower Mainland and the B.C. Interior to consider postponing their trips due to an incoming storm.
Snowfall warnings are in effect for Highways 3 and 5 between Hope and points farther east.
The weather agency issued the warnings Thursday afternoon, saying total snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 centimetres are expected by Friday evening between Hope and Merritt on Highway 5 – better known as the Coquihalla Highway – and between Hope and Princeton on Highway 3.
“Light to moderate snow will begin tonight, intensify to a period of heavy snow through Friday afternoon, and ease by early evening,” ECCC said in its warnings, attributing the snow to a “Pacific frontal system” making its way across the region.
“Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays … Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.”
A special weather statement is also in effect for a different part of Highway 3: from Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass.
That advisory does not specify an expected total accumulation, but does warn that “a significant amount” of snow could fall Thursday night through Friday, bringing with it the potential for challenging driving conditions.
