Police attempting to arrest a person on an outstanding warrant ended up shooting and killing the accused in Surrey Friday night.

Officers were called to a home near 139 Street and 100 Avenue shortly after 9 p.m. “to arrest an individual on an outstanding warrant,” the Surrey Police Service said in a statement early Saturday morning.

Police did not provide any identifying details about the accused, such as their gender, age or the alleged crimes for which they were wanted.

As police attempted to make the arrest, the accused “reportedly confronted officers with a weapon,” the SPS said in its release.

Police did not say what type of weapon the accused was allegedly wielding.

“Officers fired weapons, including a duty pistol, and the person suffered a serious injury and did not survive,” police said, adding that officers and paramedics from BC Emergency Health Services attempted to save the accused, who died at the scene.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. – which looks into all incidents involving police officers in the province that result in death or serious injury to a member of the public – has been notified and will be investigating the death.

In its own statement Saturday, the IIO asked anyone who witnessed the attempted arrest or has video from the scene to contact investigators at 855-446-8477 or use the contact form on the IIO website.

“Initial investigative steps will confirm the details of the interaction between the person and officers, and determine if police actions were necessary, reasonable, and proportionate in the circumstances,” the IIO’s statement reads.
