Authorities are investigating another overpass strike in B.C.’s Lower Mainland, this one involving a commercial garbage truck.

Social media video shows the vehicle scraping the bottom of the 112 Street overpass in Delta around 7:30 a.m. Monday.

In a statement, B.C. Highway Patrol said there were no traffic disruptions as a result of the accident, and that the damage to the overpass “does not appear to be severe.”

The driver of the garbage truck did not stop at the scene, Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said.

“Whenever a driver is involved in a collision with an overpass, no matter how minor, there is an obligation to report the incident,” McLaughlin added.

The RCMP is working with the provincial Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement branch to “follow up with the driver and company involved,” McLaughlin said.

Monday’s incident marks the sixth overpass strike reported so far this year, according to the government’s online database.

The last one took place Feb. 28 at the Dollarton Overpass on Highway 1 through North Vancouver. The database lists the carrier involved was Manmarziyaan Transport Inc., and the cause as “driver error; incorrect permit.”

Last year, the B.C. government introduced stiffer penalties for drivers found responsible for damaging provincial infrastructure, including fines of up to $100,000, imprisonment for up to 18 months, or both.
