‘Long episode of rain’ continues for Metro Vancouver

Published:

Rainfall warnings are in effect for Metro Vancouver Sunday, as an atmospheric river continues to drench the region.

“A long episode of rain, at times heavy, continues,” Environment and Climate Change Canada’s warning begins.

Total rainfall amounts will vary, with between 60 and 75 millimetres expected in the central part of the region and up to 120 millimetres over Howe Sound and at higher elevations.

“Heavy rain is expected to redevelop this morning as the atmospheric river crosses the region. Rain will taper off this afternoon as the feature pushes southeastward and weakens,” the warning from the federal weather agency continues.

Localized flooding is possible and drivers are reminded to exercise caution.

Weather warnings were also in effect for mountain highways including the Sea to Sky and the Coquihalla.

“Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions,” Environment and Climate Change Canada said.

People travelling between Squamish and Whistler were being warned of the potential for a hazardous mix of rain and wet snow, while those travelling between Hope and Merritt were being advised to expect between 15 and 20 centimetres of snow.
