The BC SPCA is hoping for a heartwarming end to the story of one poor, emaciated Mastiff mix who was recently rescued from a house in Nanaimo, B.C.
The skeletal pup, named Jace by BC SPCA staff, met the criteria for “critical distress” when he was found on the property, limp and shivering in the cold and with no visible food or water, the welfare agency said in a statement.
“This is a truly heartbreaking case,” said Eileen Drever, the organization’s senior animal protection officer.
“Jace was barely able to walk … He was suffering from fur loss and was burdened by a heavy chain. His only shelter was a dilapidated doghouse that was wet inside and lacked any bedding.”
Drever said she had been concerned the abandoned hound would not survive the night in his rundown shelter, especially considering the subzero temperatures the region has been facing.
Suffering a medley of health issues, including muscle loss, pressure sores on his pelvis, poor vision, crusty ear tips and an irritated coat, Jace was immediately whisked to hospital.
He arrived at the animal centre trusting and “looking to the staff for support and encouragement”, despite his obvious fear and disorientation derived from his limited vision, said Drever.
Jace’s treatment plan currently comprises two meals a day and an exercise schedule to help him gain weight and build muscle. His body may be on the mend but his mind, enthused Drever, is as sharp as ever.

When the pup first arrived at the centre staff were unsure as to whether he would know any tricks or commands, but he surprised them all on his very first day, with what Drever described as the perfect sit.
“He has a very handsome ‘sit’ that comes along with big puppy eyes,” she said.
“It’s impossible not to give him a treat.”
Jace will soon be looking for his forever home, but with his sweet nature, sharp mind and adorable mannerisms – Drever says he has a “ridiculously cute woof” that only emerges when he is in his kennel and his breakfast or dinner is being prepared – the protection officer suspects he won’t be looking for long.
He will be available for adoption once he has gained enough weight and recovered from his neuter surgery, she said.
