No injuries after semi flips, catches fire on Highway 1

Published:

A serious crash involving a semi truck has caused issues for the morning commute in Abbotsford.

After colliding with an SUV, a semi truck flipped over and caught on fire on Highway 1 between Langley and Abbotsford, slowing the Thursday morning commute.

Around 3:10 a.m., crews arrived and closed Highway 1 eastbound at 264th Street to put out the fire and clean up debris. By 7:30 a.m. the route had opened to single-lane traffic.

Abbotsford Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Paul Walker told CTV News the SUV was travelling east in the fast lane when it hydroplaned and rolled over, striking a semi truck in the other lane.

He said speed is being looked at as a factor.

The crash caused the semi to lose control and roll over, and it “immediately burst into flames,” he said.

Fortunately, neither driver was injured in the incident. BC Emergency Health Services told CTV News it sent an ambulance to the scene but nobody required transport to hospital.

“Everyone was able to walk away from this collision,” Walker said. “It’s a miracle that that actually happened.”

He added both drivers are co-operating with the police investigation, which is ongoing.
