A suspect alleged to have robbed a bank in Burnaby was involved in multiple crashes on Highway 1 while fleeing from police Monday, according to the RCMP.

Officers were called to a bank on Hastings Street near Sperling Avenue around noon for reports of the robbery, authorities said.

“Nobody was injured and the suspect fled the area before police arrived,” a spokesperson for the Burnaby RCMP said in a statement.

“While Burnaby RCMP officers were in the early stages of their investigation, a driver, believed to be the same suspect from the bank robbery, was then allegedly involved in several crashes which occurred on Highway 1.”

The suspect – a 56-year-old man – left his damaged car on the highway then ran across traffic into the “thick brush” on the side of the road, Mounties added.

Officers shot the man with less-lethal rounds and deployed a police dog before taking the suspect into custody.
