Entire fleet suspended after truck hits overpass in Langley

Published:

Mounties are investigating after a semi truck hit an overpass on Highway 1 in Langley Thursday morning.

A trucking company has had its entire fleet suspended after a semi truck struck an overpass in Langley Thursday morning.

The commercial truck carrying pre-formed concrete struck the CP Rail overpass near Glover road around 9:15 a.m.

“It does look like it was over-height,” explained Corporal Michael McLauglin of BC Highway Patrol.

“The overpasses themselves don’t appear to have taken any major damage. It’s mostly the load itself that was damaged.”

Police said the incident briefly shutdown Highway 1 westbound, backing up traffic until debris could be cleaned up.

“At this point, you have to understand the load was a bit of a mess. There were straps from the load all over the highway, the load itself had cracked,” McClaughlin said.

B.C. Transportation Minister Mike Farnworth told CTV News that swift action has already been taken against the company involved, Majha Trucking Ltd. out of Abbotsford.

“Its entire fleet is suspended while an investigation takes place. That investigation may take weeks,” said Farnworth.

“The overpasses are not lowering themselves, so it’s either stupidity on the part of the shipper in terms of not measuring or a driver not following. Whatever it is, it’s not acceptable and the consequences are serious.”

The ministry said the carrier currently has seven vehicles licensed in B.C. Farnworth said the company has not come to the province’s attention before.

This is the fourth time a truck’s been involved in an overpass strike this year.

There were 29 overpass strikes in 2024.
