A 22-year-old man from Surrey, B.C., has been charged in a shooting in the Northwest Territories that left one man dead and sent two others to hospital, according to authorities who issued a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest Wednesday.
Krystian Cogswell has been charged with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault and Mounties say he should be considered armed and dangerous.
The shooting took place at a home in Fort Providence on Saturday, March 15.
“Officers attended the scene and found a 31-year-old male deceased in the residence. Another injured male was found on scene and was subsequently transported to the health centre. The third male had already been taken to the health centre prior to police arrival and was subsequently air lifted to Yellowknife to receive emergency treatment,” a statement from the RCMP said.
“The investigation to date shows that Cogswell fled Fort Providence after the shooting and has likely made his way to points south of the territory.”
The RCMP has said the shooting appears to be linked to the drug trade.
Cogswell is also wanted on a warrant out of Inuvik for drug trafficking offenses from July of 2024, according to Wednesday’s statement.
At the time of the Fort Providence shooting, Cogswell was on bail and under court-ordered conditions to live in B.C. and “not be present” in the Northwest Territories.
Anyone who sees Cogswell or knows of his whereabouts is urged to contact their local police department immediately.
