Alleged purse-snatcher charged with robbery on Vancouver Island

A man who allegedly tried to steal a senior’s purse in Duncan, B.C., was arrested and charged with the help of bystanders, Mounties say.

Members of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP were called to Canada Avenue and Station Street just before 5 p.m. last Friday after receiving a report that a man attempting to take a woman’s purse, according to a statement from the detachment issued Wednesday.

Police say upon arrival bystanders were restraining the suspect so he couldn’t get away. He was arrested and remains in custody.

Meanwhile, the victim was treated by paramedics on site for injuries police described as serious but not life-threatening.

“Of particular note is the bravery of community members who came together to ensure the safety of a senior citizen,” said Staff Sgt. Ken Beard in the statement.

The suspect, identified as 47-year-old Michael Harlow, was charged with robbery. He is next due to appear in court in Port Alberni on Friday.
