A 92-year-old inmate has died of “apparent natural causes” in a federal prison in B.C.
Jonathon Reginald Taylor was serving an indeterminate sentence that began on Aug. 27, 1997, more than 27 years ago, according to the Correctional Service of Canada.
The CSC said Taylor was an inmate at the Regional Treatment Centre, part of the Pacific Institution complex in Abbotsford. He died on Monday and the CSC announced his death in a statement Thursday.
His next of kin has been notified of his death, the CSC said.
The service did not specify the crimes that led to Taylor’s indeterminate sentence, but online court records matching his name and age show he was charged in 1997 with 10 counts of “indecent assault.”
All offences were alleged to have occurred in North Cowichan, B.C. The earliest listed offence date is Jan. 1, 1966, and the latest is Jan. 1, 1977.
“As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances,” the service said. “CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.”
