Police are investigating an unusual theft in Port Coquitlam after a large, concrete bear statue was swiped from the front porch of someone’s home.
Police responded to a call Jan. 11 at 9:40 p.m. reporting the hefty sculpture missing from its post at a house near Hastings Street and Kitchener Avenue, Coquitlam RCMP said in a release issued Friday.
The statue, a dark grey piece depicting a roaring bear standing on its hind legs, weighs around 100 pounds and stands around one metre tall.
“This brazen theft from the victim’s residence is very disappointing,” said Const. John Graham.
“The statue holds significant sentimental value for the owners and is symbolic of their respect and admiration of our beloved local bear population.”
Graham said he hopes to return the statue, undamaged, to its rightful owners.
“It is incumbent on us all to respect other people’s property in an effort to maintain a sense of community,” he added.
Anyone who has any information or surveillance, dash cam or mobile video of the theft, are asked to contact the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2025-869.
