One person has died following an overnight house fire on Vancouver Island.

First responders were called to the home in the 1900 block of Toronitz Road in a rural area of Comox around 1:15 a.m., according to a statement from the Comox Valley RCMP.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and found the remains of one person inside, police said.

“While the identity of the individual is believed to be known, positive identification will be confirmed through forensic means,” the statement said.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire, but it is not believed to be criminal, according to police.

The B.C. Coroner’s Service is conducting its own investigation into the person’s death.
