1 dead, 2 arrested after stabbing outside Coquitlam pub

A 35-year-old man is dead and two men are in custody after a stabbing outside a pub in Coquitlam Friday night.

Coquitlam RCMP were called to the John B Neighbourhood Pub at 1000 Austin Ave. just before 9:45 p.m., according to a news release from the Lower Mainland’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team Saturday.

Officers were called to the scene for reports of a fight, and arrived to find bystanders administering first aid and CPR to the victim, IHIT said, adding that he died at the scene.

“Two men believed to be involved in the fight were arrested and are currently in police custody,” IHIT said in its release, adding that it had taken over the investigation and would be working closely with Coquitlam RCMP, Integrated Forensic Identification Services and the BC Coroners Service to process the crime scene.

A red tent and police tape remained set up in the parking lot outside the pub Saturday morning, and multiple RCMP vehicles remained on scene.

“Police believe this is an isolated incident with no ongoing risk to the public,” IHIT said. “The victim’s identity is not being released out of respect to his family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”

Investigators said they believe several people who witnessed the fight have not yet spoken to police. They asked those people, as well as anyone with surveillance or dash cam video from the vicinity of the pub or nearby Charland Avenue, to contact IHIT immediately.
