Police in Niagara Region have charged a man with three counts of attempted murder in connection with a car crash in Niagara Falls last year which they say was intentional.

Investigators previously said the Nov. 9 collision at Kalar and Montrose roads happened when a 52-year-old man driving a Chevrolet Equinox collided head-on with a Jeep Compass being driven by a 63-year-old woman.

Both drivers were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, but survived.

The 63-year-old woman had two female passengers in their 60s in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Neither of them was seriously injured.

On Thursday, police announced that they have now charged the driver of the Equinox, 52-year-old Todd Williston from Niagara Falls, with three counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm and three counts of attempted murder.

Police confirmed to CTV News Toronto that while Williston did not know the three people in the Jeep Compass, their investigation revealed the crash was allegedly caused with intent. They did not indicate what the motive might have been.

Williston is being held in custody pending a bail hearing on Jan. 31.

Investigators are asking anyone with additional information to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
