Toronto police have identified the victim of the city’s first homicide of the year.
On Sunday, just after 12:30 a.m., police were called to The Annex neighbourhood for reports of a person who had been wounded on Madison Avenue, just north of Bloor Street West.
Police said at the scene officers found a man with “severe injuries” and administered first aid. He was rushed to the hospital where he later died, they said.
The victim has since been identified by police as 27-year-old Toronto resident Darapheakdey “Daral” Sovann.
His cause of death and the circumstances leading up to the incident are unclear.
Investigators continue to search for three people whom they say were involved in this incident and are urging them to turn themselves in to police.
“Do the right thing, get a hold of a lawyer, and get a hold of us,” Det. Sgt. Phil Campbell, of the homicide unit, said on Sunday afternoon.
“We understand that an incident like this causes great concern in the community and that’s why were here to help find out what happened. … If you were in the area at the time of the investigation or have any information that might help us, please reach out to us.”
Anyone with further information is asked to contact Toronto police at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
