Man dies in hospital following Toronto east-end house fire

A man is dead after a fire broke out on the second floor of a home near Logan and Danforth avenues in the east end.

A man in his 60s has died in the hospital after a fire at a residence in Toronto’s east end Friday evening.

The fire call came in shortly after 5 p.m.

Fire officials said they encountered heavy smoke on the second floor of a home near Logan and Danforth avenues.

“(Crews) made an aggressive fire attack and search. During the search, they found one male victim,” Toronto fire Division Commander Paul O’Brien told reporters at the scene.

The man was pulled out of the burning home, and crews immediately performed CPR. Paramedics then rushed him to a hospital in critical condition, but he has since died.

According to officials, no one else was in the home at the time of the fire.

Crews were able to knock down the fire a short time later.

“The fire was contained just to the second storey of the home of origin. The fire did not spread beyond this residence,” O’Brien said.

“Our crews initiated an aggressive attack, and the fire was knocked down very quickly.”

The cause, origin and circumstances of the fire are still unknown, and the Office of the Fire Marshall has been notified.

O’Brien said it was too early to determine whether the home had working smoke alarms.

When asked if the fire was suspicious, he said: “Our partners at Toronto police investigate, along with Toronto Fire investigators, all fires of this nature.”
