Saskatoon residents woke up to an extremely cold Sunday morning, with temperatures plummeting to minus 30.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued an extreme cold warning at 8:22 a.m., forecasting a prolonged period of extremely cold wind chills reaching minus 45, which is expected to last for several days.

Residents are advised to take precautions to protect themselves from the cold, including dressing warmly and covering exposed skin.

Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter. Watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness, and colour change in fingers and toes. Cover up,” ECCC said on its website.

The extreme cold warning is expected to remain in effect until midweek when temperatures are expected to moderate.
