Outdoor activities on pause during extreme cold in Saskatchewan

WATCH: This week’s cold snap is forcing some Saskatchewan residents to hit pause on their weekend plans.

The ongoing cold snap is forcing some Saskatchewan residents to hit pause on their weekend plans.

In Saskatoon, the Lawson Heights Community Association announced last week that it had canceled the outdoor Winterfest event on February 9, citing cold weather as the reason.

The Prince Albert Winter Festival took a page from the same book this week and released that it is postponing Family Day sliding day at Little Red River Park until March 9.

Despite the extreme cold, the weather won’t put a stop to all the February break plans.

Some of the City of Prince Albert’s scheduled recreation activities will take place indoors, according to Curtis Olsen, City of Prince Albert Sports and Recreation manager.

“We’ve got some free skating over at the Steuart, Mann Art Gallery, Historical Society, library. So, lots of different indoor opportunities,” Olsen said.

It’s not just weekend festivals that are seeing the effect of this week’s extreme cold.

Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division canceled several bus routes Friday due to the weather.

“Student safety is our main priority, right?” division CFO Jerrold Pidborochynski said. “Obviously, when we get those wind chills or low temperatures, we can make cancellations. We also cancel bus routes if there are severe storms or road conditions that make travel dangerous.”

Environment Canada forecasts a break in the extreme cold at the end of next week, with a high of minus twelve on Thursday in Prince Albert. Until then, Saskatchewan families can keep an eye out for indoor activities during the February break.
