Fresh snowfall makes for tricky commute in and out of Saskatoon

Published:

Commuters in and out of Saskatoon should drive cautiously on Thursday.

Travel is not recommended on a number of highways around the city, and crews are actively working to clear municipal roadways after about 11 centimetres of snow fell over the last two days.

As of 8 a.m. Thursday morning, the Saskatchewan Highway Hotline advised against travelling on Highway 11 south of Saskatoon as far as Dundurn.

The service says drivers should also reconsider immediate travel east of the city on Highway 16, Highway 5 and Highway 41, due to swirling and drifting snow.

Visibility was also reduced on most highways heading out of Saskatoon on Thursday morning, according to the Saskatchewan Highway Hotline.

Inside the city, contractor graders have been mobilized to clear priority streets over the next three days, starting with primary corridors like Circle Drive, Idylwyld Drive, 22nd Street and College Drive.

In a news release Thursday morning, the City of Saskatoon said crews are focusing on clearing fresh snowfall and maintaining safe road conditions.

“Today, there will be 12 Sanders, 26 graders, and 7 plows working to maintain city streets,” the city said in the release.

“Residents are urged to use caution and be prepared for slippery roads, snow ridges, and potentially limited visibility. Watch for blue and amber flashing lights on snow maintenance equipment and give operators plenty of space to work. “
