Saskatoon police say a 19-year-old woman was found dead in a park in Fairhaven on Monday evening.
Officers were called to a park in the 300 block of Pendygrasse Road around 6 p.m. with reports that a woman was found lying there, Saskatoon police said in a news release.
When police arrived, they discovered she was dead.
Police don’t believe foul play is involved, and the investigation into her death has been turned over to the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service.
The body was found several blocks from the Saskatoon Tribal Council’s Emergency Wellness Centre — the city’s largest homeless shelter.
In a statement Tuesday afternoon, Tribal Chief Mark Arcand offered condolences to the woman’s family.
While Arcand says there was no indication the woman had ever stayed at the shelter, early indications were that the extreme cold was a factor in her death.
“Whatever the circumstances, nobody in our community should ever lose their life to the cold,” Arcand said in a news release.
“We have to look out for one another, and have proper supports and facilities in place to ensure people are kept safe. “
