Extreme cold warnings return to much of Sask., including Regina and Saskatoon

After a brief reprieve, extreme cold warnings have returned to much of Saskatchewan on Sunday.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), a prolonged period of extreme cold wind chills is expected to begin Sunday evening in southern Saskatchewan, as well as some central and northern parts of the province.

As of Sunday at 4 p.m., areas under the alert include all of southern Saskatchewan, including Regina, and parts of west central and northwest Saskatchewan, including Saskatoon, Prince Albert, and North Battleford.

Overnight low temperatures will reach near -30 C. Winds of up to 15 km/h will make wind chill values closer to – 45 C overnight.

Whie the wind chills will moderate slightly on Monday, they will return to extreme cold on Monday evening, according to the weather service.

ECCC advises people to cover up if they have to venture outside, as frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin.

People are also advised to take care of their pets when extreme cold occurs.
