These are the most dangerous intersections for collisions in Ottawa

New data from police show there were nearly 20,000 collisions in Ottawa in 2024. CTV's Tyler Fleming breaks down the worst intersections in the city.

The intersection of Hunt Club Road and Riverside Drive was the most dangerous intersection for collisions in Ottawa last year.

New data from the Ottawa Police Service shows there were 96 collisions at the intersection in Ottawa’s southwest end in 2024. There were 16 collisions that resulted in injuries at the intersection of Hunt Club and Riverside.

The intersection of Carling Avenue and Kirkwood Avenue was the second-worst spot for collisions last year, with 69 collisions, followed by West Hunt Club Road and Woodroffe Avenue with 60 collisions.

The 2024 Ottawa Police Service report on vehicle collisions shows there were 19,777 collisions across Ottawa last year. Over 2,000 collisions were hit and runs in parking lots, according to police.

Police say 16,788 of the 19,777 collisions in Ottawa last year were processed by the Collision Reporting Centre, with 2,989 collisions requiring a patrol response by officers.

“The data shows that 16,787 collisions occurred on clear days, while environmental events making road conditions less favourable, such as rain, fog, mist, freezing rain and snow, were noted for less than 5,000 collisions,” police said in a media release.

“Improving road safety and enforcing the rules of the road are significant priorities for the Ottawa Police Service. Our Traffic Services Unit is dedicated to improving safety.”

There were 18 fatal collisions on Ottawa roads last year.

Police say officers responded to 5,644 rear-end collisions on Ottawa roads in 2024 and 4,560 single-vehicle crashes. A total of 3,908 crashes involved a turning vehicle and 1,227 crashes involved a vehicle reversing.

Thursday had the highest number of collisions in 2024, and 4 p.m. was the most common time for crashes on Ottawa roads.

  • Days with the most collisions: Thursday (3,351 collisions), Friday (3,172 collisions), Tuesday (3,166 collisions)
  • Most common time for a collision: 4 p.m. (2,008 collisions), 3 p.m. (1,821 collisions), 5 p.m. (1,800 crashes)
  • Environmental conditions at time of crash: Clear (16,787 collisions), rain (1,896 collisions), snow (1,412 crashes)
  • Road conditions at time of crash: Dry (15,181 crashes), wet (3,170 crashes), loose snow (962 crashes), slush (493 collisions)
  • Collisions involving pedestrians: 218 collisions
  • Collisions involving cyclists: 123
  • Collisions involving impaired driving: 218

The data shows there were over 2,000 collisions in Ottawa parking lots where the drivers left the scene.

Statistics on collisions at Hunt Club Road-Riverside Drive

There were 96 collisions reported at the intersection of Hunt Club Road and Riverside Drive last year.

The data shows Tuesday was the worst day for collisions at the intersection with 24 crashes, followed by 17 crashes on Friday and 15 on Thursday. The worst time for collisions at the intersection was 9 a.m., followed by 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Police said 70 of the 96 collisions involved a rear-end collision, while 19 crashes were related to a “turning movement.”
