Ottawa’s Lunar New Year Parade returns to Chinatown to celebrate the Year of the Snake. CTV’s Josh Marano reports.

Hundreds gathered in Ottawa’s Chinatown on Saturday to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

The parade began on Somerset Street and featured a number of performances like lion and dragon dances, waist drums and a symbolic Yangko dance.

Katherine Choi was at the special celebration with her family, travelling all the way from Iqaluit, NU to take part in the festivities.

“I think especially because we live in the north it’s a good chance to introduce my daughters to their culture because we don’t have this up there,” Choi said. “It’s really special at this time of the year.”

This year marks the Year of the Snake.

“I was actually born the Year of the Snake. I’ve read that apparently it’s not so great for me, but I’m looking to adapt the little. I think it’ll be a year of, adaptability,” said Choi.

Known for its intelligence, mystery and ability to transform, the snake symbolizes growth renewal and adaptability.

For the first time, Ottawa police are also participating in the event, helping to wave one of the dragons through the air.

The iconic Spring Festival celebration runs 15-days with more events taking place across the community including an indoor celebration at the EY Centre on Feb. 9, 2025.
