Quebec provincial police say a 25-year-old man from Montreal is facing more than $1,600 in fines after getting a speeding ticket in Gatineau, and the owner of the vehicle has also been fined.

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) said Thursday that traffic officers stopped a driver on Highway 50 at around 11 a.m. Sunday allegedly going 162 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

Police allege the driver did not have the appropriate class of licence for the vehicle he was driving.

He’s been fined $1,639 and received 14 demerit points. His licence has also been suspended for seven days.

In addition, police say the owner of the vehicle is facing a $520 fine for letting someone without the proper licence drive it.

A 55-year-old Ottawa man is also facing more than $1,900 in fines after being given a speeding ticket in Chelsea this week.

Police stopped a driver allegedly going 163 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 5 in Chelsea at around 4 p.m. Wednesday.

In addition to the fines, the man received 14 demerit points and cannot drive in Quebec for the next seven days.
