Hundreds came out to Jacques-Cartier Park in Gatineau for the return of one of Winterlude’s biggest attractions, Snowflake Kingdom.
Super slides for tubing, obstacle courses, ziplining and snow carvings make this an event one for everyone to enjoy.
The snowy playground opened to the public Saturday morning with the wind chill dropping to -27. Melanie Brault, Canadian Heritage’s director of capital celebrations, says that’s right where they want it to be.
“Make sure you’re dressed appropriately but get outside and enjoy what winter has to offer. That’s what Winterlude is all about.” Brault said.
The main draw at Snowflake Kingdom is the massive, man-made, six-lane sledding hill. Brault says a cold and snowy winter have helped get the slide in its best condition in years.
“Building the slides are super important, and it’s such a popular attraction for folks,” Brault said. “I think it just gives you that experience of coming down really quickly and it’s just such an iconic winter activity to do in the national capital region.”
There were more activities at Rideau Hall with families enjoying the ice rink.
Along with skating, people were also given the opportunity to learn about another culture. The Austrian Embassy set up a booth with trivia cards and the chance for guests to play “Ice Stock”, a traditional Austrian sport.
“It’s really for all ages to learn something about Austria, to really engage with our culture,” said Lisa Butzenlechner with the embassy. “It’s great to present our traditions here in Ottawa.”
Other Winterlude activities on Saturday included the Snowphy Trophy competition, the Winterlude Triathlon and skating on the Rideau Canal.
