A Kingston driver is facing multiple charges after crashing into a guardrail on Highway 401 and running away with suspected fentanyl in the early hours of Thursday morning, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).
Police say they received a call shortly after 2:30 a.m. reporting a single-vehicle crash on the highway near Long Beach.
When police arrived at the scene, they found a crashed car. Police say the unattended car was obstructing traffic.
“The driver had been observed leaving the scene on foot,” the OPP said in a news release Saturday.
Police located and arrested the driver a short time later. The OPP says that the suspect “was found to be in possession of approximately 90 grams of suspected fentanyl as well as items typically associated with drug trafficking.”
The 56-year-old was charged with multiple offences, including possession of schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking, careless driving, dangerous operation, fail to remain at the scene of an accident, fail to report an accident, obstruct a peace officer, and four counts of failure to comply with undertaking.
The accused remains in custody after appearing at a bail hearing in court.
