World Record attempt at Timmins rink

World Record attempt at Timmins’ Sk8te Hollinger From CTV Northern Ontario’s Lydia Chubak: Skaters in Timmins attempt to beat the world record for longest skating chain.

In Timmins, people gathered on Family Day to try to set a world record.

The idea was to have more than the 400 skaters on the ice at once, on the Figure 8 Rink in Hollinger Park, apopular place in Timmins during the winter months.

Ken Pye is the founder of Sk8te Hollinger and he put out a call to the public last week in hopes of attracting hundreds to the rink on this Family Day.

When he saw people in Winnipeg set an unofficial record for the world's longest skating chain, he figured a similar feat could take place in Timmins.

"We're trying to beat Winnipeg’s unofficial world record for the longest skating chain. We're trying to reach at least 400 and I don't know if Mother Nature is going to let us do it, but we're going to try.” said Pye.

He really wanted to beat what happened in Winnipeg earlier this month, but fell short.  Timmins residents did come out and lace up, just not as many as hoped for. Pye figures a minus 24 wind-chill and blowing snow kept people inside.

Participants told CTV News that it was a great idea and a good way to get people out.

"I give him credit for some of the ideas he comes out with, even if they don't always get to the full dream or potential.  It's great to see the community coming out having fun and enjoying his ideas and concepts." said Timmins Mayor Steve Black.

Organizers say 275 people took part in the skating chain, but are not disappointed by the turnout. They say they'll try again some other time.
