Woman charged in fatal crash west of Sudbury was impaired, police say

One killed, two injured in single-vehicle crash Tragedy struck on a First Nation west of Sudbury on Monday when a vehicle crashed into a tree killing one man and injuring two others.

A 40-year-old northern Ontario woman is facing several charges, including drunk driving, after the car she was driving hit a tree killing one man and seriously injuring another passenger.

The single-vehicle crash happened just before noon Monday on Reserve Road near Dump Road in Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, west of Sudbury.

"Preliminary investigation indicated that a motor vehicle had struck a tree. The front passenger was lodged inside the vehicle against the tree. That passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene," Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release.

The victim has been identified as 50-year-old Wayne Nebenionquit, a resident of the First Nation.

Nebenionquit's social media profile lists him as an ore hauler for Sonny Toulouse at Vale and said he attended Lively District Secondary School and Cambrian College.

Loved ones have posted about his passing on social media.

 

"The driver of the vehicle received minor injuries and another passenger received serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Both people were transported to the local hospital by Sudbury Paramedic Services," OPP said.

After being released from hospital, the driver, a local woman, was arrested and charged with operation causing death and bodily harm, dangerous operation causing death and operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration of 80 or more.

The accused is being held in custody pending a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday in Sudbury.

As the investigation continues, police have closed the road. It is expected to reopen by 7:30 p.m.

Police are asking people to avoid the scene, the First Nation said on its social media page.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.
