Despite the snow on the ground, plans for camps to keep children busy during the summer are well underway.

Science North in Sudbury announced Monday it is expanding its bilingual summer camps to four new communities in the northeast.

The science camps will now be available in 39 communities across the region, including Mindemoya on Manitoulin Island, as well as Mattawa, Deep River and Petawawa east of North Bay.

“This milestone reflects Science North’s commitment to making hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) learning accessible to children across the province,” the news release said.

“Since 1987, Science North ‘Summer Science Camps’ have inspired more than 30,000 children, providing interactive and educational experiences that foster curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning.”

Programs in French, ranging from one to eight weeks, are being offered in a dozen locations, including Sturgeon Falls, Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay, Hearst, Timiskaming, Kapuskasing, Timmins, Thunder Bay, Red Lake and three in Sudbury.

The week-long camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for children ages four-11.

Some of the STEM programs include learning about rockets, space exploration and celestial navigation, while others explore wildlife biology and ecosystems.

Camps are run in communities from Barrie to Thunder Bay between July 2 – August 29.
