One dead following Sudbury house fire

Published:

A victim has succumbed to their injuries in a fire in Sudbury, one of a few recent blazes across the region.

Despite life-saving measures, one man has died following a house fire on Bessie Avenue in Greater Sudbury’s Donovan area Tuesday.

Firefighters were able to rescue him from the home after a blaze broke out, deputy fire chief Jesse Oshell told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in a phone interview Wednesday.

He later succumbed to his injuries after being taken to hospital by paramedics, Oshell confirmed.

Not suspicious

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Oshell said, but it is not considered suspicious.

“Cooking remains our No. 1 cause of careless fires,” Oshell said.

“So, certainly, we need to be extra cautious and careful.”

Several displaced

The fire destroyed the home, displacing several people.

“Some were staying with family and others did contact Red Cross,” Oshell added.

Importance of smoke alarms

With all the recent fires, Oshell said it is a good reminder to ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

“Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors save lives,” he said.

With the consistent low temperatures, frequent use of heating appliances and wood burning are common.

Oshell reminds people to always stay present while there is an open flame and ensure all equipment is in good condition.
