Sudbury council approves fire hall renovations

More decisions on Sudbury fire stations Council made major decisions on fire safety Tuesday, voting to close a station to build another–along with millions in renovations

City councillors in Sudbury have voted to spend millions to renovate the Long Lake and Van Horne fire stations.

Ward Coun. Bill Leduc introduced an amendment to keep the new station in Minnow Lake or at least on the south side of The Kingsway, but it was voted down 9-4.

"That south side, in trying to reduce or costs would be an ideal location right beside the dog park and when you're coming into Minnow Lake – that would be beautiful," Leduc said.

Ward 9 Coun. Deb McIntosh said such decisions are premature.

"I haven't seen the wording of an amendment yet but I can't support directing our staff to determine where these buildings should go to provide the best respond time to our community," McIntosh said.

The motion was a hot-button issue for some and led council to eject Ward 2 Coun. Michael Vagnini.

The average age of most of the city's 24 stations is 49 years.

This following a city council meeting in June which saw decisions made for the future of the Skead and Beaver Lake fire halls amoung others.
