A late-season snow storm has closed sections of major highways in northern Ontario on Thursday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police in Timmins and area are urging motorists to avoid travel until weather conditions improve.

Highway 11 was closed from Highway 560 in Englehart all the way to Kapuskasing due to “treacherous weather and driving conditions,” OPP said just before 3 a.m.

It reopened at 12:16 p.m. between Highway 66 in Kenogami and Clear Lake Road in Kapuskasing, the Ministry of Transportation said on social media.

Highway 144 is closed at Gogama all the way to Timmins because of the winter storm.

Highway 665 north of Timmins is closed between Kidd Creek Mine Road and Driftwood at the Highway 11 intersection.

Around noon Thursday, Highway 129 between Chapleau and Thessalon reopened as well as Highway 101 between Chapleau and Highway 651, OPP said.

“Ontario 511 is experiencing technical difficulties with inaccurate incidents and closures,” the Ontario Ministry of Transportation website said in an alert Thursday.

“We apologize for the interruption. We will advise when the system is back up and running properly.”
