Police in Elliot Lake say a driver is facing numerous charges after they pulled over a “known” blue sports car late Wednesday evening.

Ontario Provincial Police stopped the vehicle “with no plates on Farquhar Place in Elliot Lake” around 11:45 p.m.

“The driver had a suspended license and no vehicle documents could be provided to police,” the OPP said in a news release Thursday.

A search of the vehicle uncovered drug paraphernalia and drugs believed to be fentanyl, hydromorphine and cocaine.

“The driver was later assessed by an OPP drug recognition evaluator and subsequently charged,” police said.

The 30-year-old resident of Elliot Lake is charged with driving while impaired by drugs, three counts of drug possession, two counts of unauthorized possession of a weapon, driving while suspended, driving without insurance and without licence plates and failing to apply for a permit after acquiring a new vehicle.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on March 13.

“The OPP would like to remind the motoring public to drive sober (and) this includes drug consumption, as well,” police said.

“Impairment by drugs is a crime under the Criminal Code and drivers are subject to the same penalties as those who are charged with driving while impaired by alcohol.

Anyone who suspects someone is driving while impaired is asked to dial 911 or contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
