North Bay police spot stolen vehicle on Hwy. 17, find drugs, suspended driver

Two people from Ottawa were charged after police stopped a stolen vehicle near North Bay last weekend.

The incident took place around 9 p.m. March 23 when officers patrolling Highway 17 received an alert about a stolen vehicle from their automated licence plate reader.

“Officers conducted a traffic stop, and both the driver and passenger were arrested for possession of stolen property,” police said in a news release Tuesday.

“During a search incident to arrest, police seized suspected fentanyl, crystal methamphetamine, hydromorphone, and morphine, with an estimated street value of approximately $6,500.”

Expanable baton seized

Other items seized included five cellphones, drug packaging materials, an expandable baton, gift cards and $580 in cash.

A 36-year-old from Ottawa has been charged with several drug trafficking offences, possession of property obtained by crime and two counts of driving while suspended.

In addition, a 35-year-old, also from Ottawa, was charged with several drug trafficking offences, possession of property obtained by crime and two counts of violating probation orders.

Both accused remain in custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on March 26.
