“The reorganization is essential as we reshape VBM for sustained long-term growth.”

The company has not said how many people are affected in Sudbury, only that the cuts “involve the departure of some colleagues across all areas of the business including operating, administrative and corporate roles.”

Still committed to Ontario

“We remain committed to our operations in Ontario and to transforming VBM into a leading energy transition materials business,” the statement said.

“These changes are part of a process that began late last year. They will position us to better withstand current market conditions for commodities and help us achieve the full potential of our assets and mineral endowments for the benefit of our stakeholders.”

Ray Hammond, president of the United Steelworkers Union Local 6500, confirmed that its 2,800 members haven’t been impacted by the layoffs.

Hammond told CTV News that the union is aware there was a management reorganization that involved people leaving the company.
