Last week, tariffs surrounding Chinese steel and aluminum products went into effect and stakeholders in northern Ontario and abroad say it's good news.
The Government of Canada made the move citing unfair trade practices by China impacting domestic industries.
Here at home, advocates welcomed the tariffs adding that this levels the playing field and they want nothing more than free trade.
It also allows for confidence among employees at Algoma Steel for example.
"And, essentially, what it means for all CPSA members, including Algoma, is that they do have some help and the workers will feel more assured that the company has a better chance competing fairly in the marketplace as opposed to the dumping that was going on," said Catherine Cobden, of the Canadian Steel Producers Association.

United Steelworkers Local 2251 in Sault Ste. Marie also issued a statement writing in part:
"This is a good step in the right direction to protect the Canadian steel industry, however, there is more than can be done. One example is to ensure the country of origin is not being circumvented by China to avoid the increased tariff."
