Iconic Shakespeare classic opens in new downtown Sudbury open-air theatre

Romeo and Juliet to open outdoor Sudbury theatre A new outdoor theatre in Sudbury is set to open, with the first production slated to be Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Tuesday marks the opening night for both the Sudbury Theatre Centre/YES Theatre production of Romeo & Juliet and its new performance space, the Refettorio.

"The new, intimate, outdoor theatre allows you to watch this timeless tragedy unfold under a starlit sky," STC/YES said in a news release.

"Witness the passion and forbidden love between Romeo and Juliet as their iconic story comes alive under the visionary guidance of directors Julia Nish-Lapidus and James Wallis, two creative powerhouses renowned for their ability to breathe fresh life into classic works."

The play stars Sudbury native Katie Wise as Juliet and award-nominated actor Adriano Reis as Romeo.

Out of the cast of 10, seven of the actors are from Sudbury.

The $2.8 million Refettorio is located on Durham Street across from the YMCA in downtown Sudbury.

Romeo & Juliet will run until Sept. 3 and then The Music of Shania Twain show will begin at the space Sept. 7.

This comes as the smash-hit production of Jersey Boys comes to a close Aug. 27. The musical has been running since July and has broken attendance and Sudbury box office records.

Katie Behun will videos on the show and a special tour of the new outdoor theatre airing on CTV News on Tuesday night and the videos will be posted above when they become available.
