Highway 6 improvements to be made over next two years

Published:

Work will soon get underway at giving Highway 6 a new look.

The Ministry of Transportation says it has plans to rehabilitate the major roadway from the Little Current swing bridge to Whitefish River First Nation.

The work will include grading, drainage, granular base, hot mix paving, electrical and structural improvements.

Paving and culvert replacements are also being planned.

"That's a bonus, you'd think you were driving over an old wagon trail. It's that bad, it's really, really terrible," said Assiginack Mayor Dave Ham.

"We were very fortunate," said Al MacNevin, mayor of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands. "We got a delegation with Minister Mulroney at the ROMA conference and that was one of the items we wanted to talk about, when is it going to be repaired because it's been terrible for a long time and you feel your teeth chattering when you're driving it. So anyway it was an interesting meeting, when we got there and found out that they were committed to redoing the highway this summer."

The work is expected to take roughly two construction seasons.
