The federal government is providing $256,500 to allow Kivi Park in Sudbury to expand its extensive trail network.

The Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario, known as FedNor, is providing $256,500 in funding for the development of trails at Kivi Park in Sudbury.

The money will be used to improve and expand the park’s mountain bike trail network.

“This investment will enhance accessibility, elevate rider experiences and position Kivi Park as a premier destination for cycling enthusiasts of all skill levels,” a FedNor news release said Tuesday.

“The funding will fuel the redesign and expansion of over 21 kilometres of trails, connecting 18 kilometres of existing routes and introducing exciting new segments to create a seamless, safe, and accessible network designed for riders of all ages and abilities.”

The upgrades will mean trails will be able to accommodate adaptive mountain bikes, allowing Kivi to open its trails to riders with disabilities.

“This $256,500 investment will significantly improve the user experience at Kivi Park, while also providing a major boost to our local economy,” Nickel Belt MP Marc Serré is quoted as saying in the news release.

“It is an important step toward maximizing the full social and economic potential of this premier tourism destination in Nickel Belt-Greater Sudbury.”

“This investment allows us to enhance our trails and welcome more riders than ever, making Kivi Park a destination for adventure, connection, and community growth,” added Kivi executive director Kerry Lamarche.

Kivi Park includes more than 600 acres of land in Greater Sudbury. It has an 85-kilometre trail network maintained year-round for activities like hiking, mountain biking, fat biking, snowshoeing, as well as both classic cross-country skiing and skate skiing.
