Beloved Broadway classic to take the stage in Greater Sudbury

The beloved Broadway classic Chicago is about to hit the stage in Greater Sudbury.

The Tony, Olivier, Oscar and Grammy award-winning musical opens July 9 at the Sudbury Theater Centre (STC) accompanied by a 10-piece jazz band.

The 13-cast-member production of one of the best-selling Broadway musicals of all time is YES Theatre’s fifth production of the 2024 season.

Set in the 1920s, the show features hits like ‘All That Jazz’ and ‘Cell Block Tango’ with the story revolving around Roxie Hart, a fame-hungry performer who murders her lover and finds herself in Cook County Jail. The production explores the themes of corruption, celebrity and the North American obsession with fame while giving a satirical and glamorous glimpse into America’s iconic Jazz Age.

YES Theatre’s artistic director Alessandro Costantini told CTV News that from flashy costumes to the big musical score, there is a lot for viewers to look forward to.

“There’s a ton of heart. There’s a ton of really challenging and I think, exciting ideas that are explored in the show,” he said.

“The music is like the most thrilling score in Broadway history, I think.”

The theatre centre said more than 3,000 tickets have already been sold for Chicago putting it on par with their record-breaking performance of Jersey Boys which sold more than $1 million in tickets.

The show runs from July 9 to Aug. 3.

Tickets area available online or at the STC box office on Shaughnessy Street.

“You’re going to have a really enjoyable, brilliant time,” said Costantini.
