‘This winter, I feel like it’s a real one' say Montrealers after snowfall

Two people were injured in a massive 50-care pileup south of Montreal after heavy snowfall.

Heavy snowfall caused chaos and several crashes on Montreal’s roads Thursday.

“It’s very slippery, you got to be safe,” one driver told CTV News.

Over on Highway 10 whiteout conditions, made driving dangerous.

The SQ says two people suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital after a 50-car pileup on the South Shore.

And a semi-trailer was in a ditch after what seemed to be a collision with a car.

One woman making the drive from New York said visibility was bad.

“From the border here it was pretty miserable,” she said.

A family of Australian tourists found themselves not, having under packed.

“We’ll have to buy more.”

People braving slippery streets had some near misses.

“I almost cracked my knee,” said Sophia Pierrelus.

But others welcomed the wintry weather.

“Last winter was really warm for what it’s supposed to be,” said Yoan Ladeini. “This winter, I feel like it’s a real one.”

CAA Quebec says drivers should double their distance between cars and give themselves at least six seconds to make last minute moves. Plus, it’s important to clear snow off headlights and your car’s roof.

They say you could get fined up to $100 for not doing that.

Meanwhile, service on the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) is reduced as staff work on the winter breaking system.

As for the city’s snow removal operation, a spokesperson says it will launch at 7 p.m. Friday, with 2,500 trucks hitting the road.
