A Quebec City woman who came to Montreal to party with friends as their designated driver is now on trial for driving under the influence and severely injuring her two passengers in a spectacular highway accident.
Elodie Bouffard was a 23 year-old real-estate agent when she spent the night of Aug. 28, 2021 partying at a restaurant in Old Montreal.
But when Bouffard drove off, with her two friends on board, she got onto the Metropolitan Highway eastbound — but in the wrong direction — near St-Michel. Her car crashed into oncoming traffic.
The accident left five people severely injured, including her two passengers. She walked away unharmed.
Bouffard is now on trial for impaired driving and dangerous driving causing injuries. Her two friends, Christina Tremblay and Jessica Chouinard, suffered major injuries. Both spent months in hospital and remain physically affected to this day.
On Wednesday, the prosecution heard from Bouffard’s friends at the time, who listed the amount of alcohol they consumed that night.
Bouffard’s lawyers have not hinted at their line of defence for the time being. If convicted, Bouffard could face up to 14 years behind bars.
The trial is expected to last nine days with the two victims taking the stand on Friday.
